RETURN TO PROJECTS

Shortly after moving to Kansas City in 2004, I started playing saxophone with the Mid America Freedom Band, which is an all volunteer community band comprised mostly of LGBT members and some great allies. In addition to playing in the band, I also served on the board of directors. For our Fall 2009 concert I came up with the concept of a concert to review the progress made in LGBT rights since the Stonewall riots 40 years earlier.

I became the Production Committee Chair in order to see through my vision for the concert, which not only included playing live music, but also had slides to go along with certain selections, and a fun scene involving two same-sex couples getting pretend married - then Missouri State Senator Jolie Justus was one of the couples! The Production Committee met for several months prior to the concert to pull everything together for what turned out to be one of the favorite concerts for the band and its fans.
