During my time working at Swope Health Seriveces from 2007 to 2009, I frequently attended a monthly networking group called MAPP, or the Metropolitan Association of Prevention Professionals. The group focused on substance abuse prevention services being offered across the Kansas City metropolitan area.
I worked with MAPP to help plan their 2009 regional conference, titled The Message in the Music, and presented an hour-long session during the conference called Social Ramifications of Substance Abuse. My presentation discussed the ways in which a lot of different groups and organizations are working on prevention with youth of some kind or another, and how we can aim for working together to strengthen our impact. I pulled from my experiences working in HIV/STI prevention as well as my work at Synergy Services working with homeless and runaway youth to share examples.
